HISTORY THROUGH PHOTOGRAPHY

The best way to see into the past is to look into photographs taken in the past. Reading about history and listening to history is one way, but to actually see into history is the only way to feel as if you have actually been there. The following photographs are just a small collection of pictures taken over the years.

douglas foxwell

This photograph, we believe, was taken in November 1910. The scouter in the centre is the founder of our group, Douglas Foxwell. Directly behind Douglas Foxwell are the colours. These were embroidered by mothers of the scouts. The colours were presented in 1910.

the building of our hq

Our HQ originally was based on Full Street in Derby in the All Saints Church House. This was next to the River Derwent, hence the word Derwent added in brackets to our name. In the late 20's we were using Capt Bennett's house and extensive gardens for our meetings. A new housing estate called for the demolition of his house so this gave us the idea to build our own HQ. Reginald Treadgold (The Asst Scouter) was a house agent and civil engineer. He drew up plans for our HQ whilst we bought some land from behind St Giles church in Normanton. The photo's that you are about to see are all different stages in the construction of our HQ which is still in use today after 90 years.
